Mermaid Seafood Restaurant: Voted Best Fish and Chips by TripAdvisor

Fish and chips has long been recognized as the nation's favorite dish. But nothing beats that plate by the sea

Luckily, the West Country has plenty of coastal fry shops, but one of them was just voted best. According to TripAdvisor reviews, Mermaid Seafood Restaurant in St. Ives, Cornwall serves the best fish and chips in the West Country and ranks in the top 10 in the whole of the UK.

With 815 five-star ratings, people gave this place a lot of praise. One person wrote: "Really friendly and efficient staff and the food was delicious. I had crab cakes followed by a seafood platter.

“All the fish were perfectly prepared. Three other partygoers also loved their meals and my brother said his  steak was also cooked to perfection.

Another person said, “This restaurant is a little gem. From the bottles hanging from the ceiling to the absolutely wonderful staff, I  never tire of eating here. The food was simply delicious, cooked to perfection and very tasty.

A third wrote: "Best meal of our five day trip to St Ives! Great restaurant, great friendly service and excellent food. We really enjoyed our dinner.Thank you  all the team it was perfect.” The  price of a popular takeaway rose to £9  last year as ingredients became more expensive and chip shop owners  desperate to lower prices to avoid alienating customers. Some say they have no choice because they are concerned about the closure.

The 54-year-old said, "You never know what's going to happen to prices." Oil doubled,  gas and power more than doubled, and fish and everything else followed.

“I'm worried. We're just wondering if we'll be around for many more years. The current situation is very scary.People don't come as often as they used to. You can't afford it.

"We charge £9.90 for plain cod and chips." Three years ago it was £6.We try to keep margins low for our customers but it's very difficult to keep them high."

And Nick Lomvardos, 56, who has owned Bishopston Fish Bar since 2010, said: "It's crippling us with something fight again. If it's not  gas and electricity, then oil. If it's not  oil, then it's fish.”If it's not the fish, it's the packaging. If it's not the packaging, it's the potatoes: £6 per bag to £22 per bag.

"There is no gain. This time last year fish and chips was £6, now it's £10. Hundreds of shops have closed. Every  day you see outlets across the country  and it's really sad.

" I don't you know he wants to close it.I call her my little girl. I started it over. I refuse to give up and will keep going until I get sick or get to the point where I'm losing a lot of money every month."
